Otranto's coastline is among the most geologically dramatic in Salento — a twelve-kilometre stretch where the Adriatic carves limestone cliffs into caves, arches, and sea stacks that have stood since the Pleistocene.
The same tectonic forces that fractured the heel of Italy left a shore defined by vertical walls dropping into water so clear that kelp forests are visible at fifteen metres. Routes vary by operator, but all include swim stops in the protected marine zone south of Punta Palascìa, the easternmost point of the Italian peninsula. The ritual is consistent: a two-to-three-hour loop, cave exploration, anchored swimming, and an aperitivo served on deck as the boat drifts off Torre dell'Orte. Prosecco, taralli, and local cheese are standard; some operators add orecchiette salad. The return leg follows the same cliffs from a different angle, low sun illuminating strata invisible in morning light. No tour lands on the shore — the marine park prohibits beaching — but passengers leave with a geological education and salt in their hair.
